Nowadays high-density polyethylene (LDPE) and low-density polyethylene (HDPE) are actively used.

Polyethylene obtained at high pressure (150-300 MPa, 150-320˚С) is called high-pressure polyethylene (HD polyethylene) or low-density polyethylene (LDPE).

It is obtained by polymerizing ethylene in autoclave or tubular reactor. HD polyethylene is inert and easily decomposes, it is an excellent dielectric. The material is not remarkable by its strength, but it is superbly stretching and preserves flavors. That is why polyethylene sheets are suitable for food industry where it is important to preserve food freshness.

Low-density polyethylene (LD polyethylene) has high density molecules and because of this has higher strength than HD polyethylene. It is obtained at low pressure (<4 MPa, 80˚С) on complex organometallic catalysts in suspension or in gas phase.

Other production technology makes LD polyethylene stable to high temperatures and supercooling, and also impact actions. Thanks to that it is very easy to disinfect. It is used in medical and chemical industries for storage of reagents and various liquids. For their production polyethylene sheets (LD polyethylene) are suitable, which is absolutely harmless in contact with foodstuffs. Also, sometimes it is used to make dishes.

High molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) should be noted separately. High molecular weight polyethylene sheets are actively used in military industry: special technology is used to make body armor and helmets. As insulators high molecular weight polyethylene rods are used in production of electric appliances. Recently, they began using HMWPE in production of prosthesis.
